I believe that every mother should treat herself to a motherhood session with her little ones. And not just on mothers day, because every day deserves to be celebrated. Mothering has been one of the most humbling experiences of so many of our lives, so imagine having a gift like these photos to look back on when your kids are older! These two joined me on a windy evening at The Butte just outside Kimberley BC and I couldn’t wait to rush home and upload them!

So obviously this mama is a Goddess, I mean, you can see that just by looking at her, but you know what else she is? An all around amazing human. When she reaches out about needing photos whether it’s a motherhood session, family session or newborn session, I immediately get excited simply to see her again. A literal angel on earth. She drove over to Kimberley BC for this sweet session with her babes.

The "N" Family {Kimberley/Cranbrook Family Photographer}
I'm going to be honest...overly posed family portraits make me want to cry. In fact, I fail to even see the point of them. Why dish out hundreds of dollars to have someone provide you a false memory? Lets face it, it's all an illusion. Those types of photos are not an accurate representation of your family. When I started getting into family portraits my immediate instinct was to "give the people what they wanted", which I thought was stiffly posed portraits that Grandma and Grandpa would love! But as time has gone b,y I've noticed myself unconsciously evolving my workflow so that I try and get those "posey" shots out of the way to have more time for the candid moments with parents and their children. At first I wasn't sure how people would react when they saw that there was only a handful of "grandma" shots in their proofing gallery, but then it dawned on me that the work I post on social media has allowed the type of people who want those sorts of memories to find me, and in turn, for me to find them. The newly famous quote "your vibe attracts your tribe" actually has a lot of truth to it! I feel like I can offer more then just "family photos" now. I feel like I can offer a real memory, a real connection. You cannot deny that when you look at this mothers eyes as she gazes at her children's faces that you don't absorb a true sense of how deeply she loves her babies.

Meet Heidi and Sam. A dynamic mother daughter duo. I had asked Heidi to model for a Mum and baby session for me so that I could test out some unfamiliar locations, try my hand at styling a session, and to give my new assistant some on the job experience. Generally for work like this I do a lot of guiding so that I get the vision that I had in mind. However, these 2 completely blew my vision out of the water and gave me something better then I could have expected. I asked Heidi to just play and interact with her daughter and I would shoot her as she went. "No problem!" No awkwardness. No weird blank "I don't know what I'm doing" stares, just genuine connections. My favourite!! Even though Sam wipes out once, and went in the water a little too far and ended up with cold wet feet, we got some beautiful images of what motherhood is really all about, comforting your littles. I don't even think Sam noticed half the time that there was a crazy lady following her around with a camera which just added to the feel of this session.
Heidi is one of the most amazing people I have ever met. If only I could some how tap into just a fraction of her strength and optimism. Despite having experience unfathomable loss in her life, she remains the life of the party. Her lust for life is contagious and you can't help but smile when your around her.
